नव्हतो. कारण तशी जरूर पडली नाही. तिथे बटन दाबलं की लाईट लागतो एवढंच माहित होतं. अशा स्थितीत आमची पाचवीची परीक्षा कोरेगाव येथे झाली. चक्क आठवडाभर आम्ही तिथं राहिलो. कुठे व कुणीकडे राहिलो ते आता अंधूकसही आठवत नाही. आई स्वतः अगर भावाजवळ फडक्यात भाकरी व मद्या बनवून देत असे. त्यावेळी पाचवीला सुध्दा मान होता. पाचवी पास झालेल्यांना मिलिटरीत किंवा पोलीस दलात प्रवेश मिळायचा. माझे थोरले बंधू यशवंत, ज्यांना आम्ही नाना म्हणायचो, आमच्यात सर्वांत जास्त म्हणजे सातवीपर्यंत शिकले होते. त्याच्या पलिकडे मात्र कुणीच शिकले नव्हते. सातवी शिकलेल्या लोकांनाही तेव्हा उत्तम नोकन्या मिळत. माझे वडील जरी पाचवीपर्यंत शिकले असले तरी आई पूर्णपणे अशिक्षितच होती, पण तरीही दोघेही शिक्षणाचे महत्व ओळखून होते. त्यामुळे शिक्षणासाठी त्यांच्याकडून सतत प्रोत्साहन मिळत असे.

मी सहावीला असताना आमचे थोरले बंधू केशव यांचे लग्न ठरलं. अजूनही बरचसं आठवतं. आतासारखं मुलगा अगर मुलगी प्रत्यक्ष पाहण्याची पध्दत नव्हती, नवरा मुलगा व नवरी मुलगी लग्नातच समोरासमोर येत असत. लग्नात तर मुलीचा चेहरा पूर्णपणे झाकून टाकलेला असे. त्यावर भलं मोठं बाशिंग व मोठमोठ्या कागदाच्या मुंडावळ्या लावलेल्या असायच्या. मुलीचे वडील व त्यांचे बंधू आमच्या घरी येऊन गेलेले होते. रिवाजाप्रमाणे मुलांच्याकडील पुरुष माणसांनी जायचं ठरलं. भल्या सकाळीच बैलगाडी जुंपली होती. गावातील प्रतिष्ठित दीनबंधू न्यूज संपादक सत्यशोधक शंकरराव लिंगे 73 87 37 78 01
